Court Accompaniment Training

Friday, January 17, 2025

CIPR partner with American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and Denver Justice and Peace Committee (DJPC) to host a court accompaniment training. Court accompaniment teams offer support to immigrants by accompanying them to court appearances, ICE check-ins, and other appointments to demonstrate strong community support.

The 2024 Presidential Election and the Future of U.S. Migration Policy

Moderated by CIPR Student Liaison Victoria Torres, a panel of experts including elected officials, immigration advocates, and migration scholars delved into the specifics of each candidate’s migration proposals and discuss the ramifications for Coloradans and Americans as a whole.

CIPR invited law professor and writer César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández to speak about his book, Welcome the Wretched: In Defense of the "Criminal Alien", at the Sturm College of Law. García Hernández is a former professor at Sturm Law. Listen back to his talk and Q&A with students.

Laboring for Justice

CIPR celebrated the release of Laboring for Justice: The Fight Against Wage Theft in an American City authored by Dr. Rebecca Galemba! We discussed the book and research with DU alumni and advocates, followed by skits performed by the Romero Theater Troupe. Appetizers and drinks accompanied the art exhibit.

    Spring Symposium
    Navigating Partnerships with Migrant and Refugee Communities: Mental Health, Engaged Learning, and Accompaniment
    March 12 - April 12, 2024

    The Symposium was a valuable gathering, uniting experts, faculty, community partners, students, alumni, and volunteers to refine their knowledge and learn about ways to improve our studies and support of (im)migrants and refugees in the United States. 

    We would like to thank Dr. Gwen Mitchell for her workshop on creating communities of care; to the DU faculty who took part in a panel on community-engaged learning; and to our keynote speaker, Dr. Whitney L. Duncan of the University of Northern Colorado.

    Our recent donation drive was a beautiful reminder of what community support can achieve. Collected clothing items have been delivered to Clothes To Kids of Denver and Catholic Charities of Denver, where they’re now helping individuals and families in need.

    Navigating New Horizons in Denver, CO: Examining Challenges Faced by Recent Arrivals and Advocacy Strategies for Support
    March 13, 2024

    To conclude the Winter Quarter, graduate students in the Qualitative Research Methods course presented their insightful research on a range of topics—from the experiences of recent arrivals and advocacy strategies, to judicial interactions, the visible and invisible impacts of FERM, and the community networks among migrant workers.

    We were honored to welcome Mayra Juarez-Denis, Executive Director of Centro de los Trabajadores, whose powerful keynote address emphasized action, empowerment, and sustainable support for migrants. Special thanks to the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (RMIAN), Centro de los Trabajadores, and all participants for contributing to a successful event.

    Laboring for Justice: Panel, Theater, & Art Exhibit
    May 2, 2023

    We celebrated the release of Laboring for Justice: The Fight Against Wage Theft in an American City by Dr. Rebecca Galemba with an inspiring evening of conversation, performance, and art. DU alumni and community advocates joined in a rich discussion about the book's research. The Romero Theater Troupe brought stories to life through powerful skits, and the night concluded with appetizers, drinks, and a moving art exhibit.

    Liminal Legality: Immigration in the Rocky Mountain West
    April 7 - 8, 2022

    CIPR's first symposium featured presentations from migration experts, immigration advocates and allies, community partners, students, and legal scholars. At this two-day event, panelists applied Cecilia Menjivar's contributions on liminal legality and legal violence to examine current immigration issues in local, state, and transnational contexts. Each panel focused on CIPR’s three, core pillars:

    • Education and Health
    • Work
    • Intersections between the crimmigration system, law, and policy
